Fiona Ross, Pathway Leader of Knitted Textiles and co-creator of Shed Textiles curated an eye-catching stand of graduates textiles work at Indigo, Paris 2011. This year Fiona was assisted by graduate Louise Burton (2011) and colleague Alison Firth.

Once again the response to graduate work was incredibly positive with many companies stopping by to look for new and innovative pieces.

Other tutors from the course went out to Paris for a day visit to research trends at Premier Vision, network with design companies and to see graduates Beth Pryer and Harri Batty who were showing as part of TEXPRINT 2011.

The aim of SHED is to act as an interface between graduates and business. This year many companies showed their interest in working with our graduate designers.

In September 2012 SHED co-creator Paul Murphy Pathway Leader of Printed Textiles will be at the helm, presenting our future graduates work at this international showcase.

Rosie Thompson joins Arts Thread at DESIGNERSBLOCK

Rosie Thompson (Surface Design Graduate 2011) will be joining ARTS THREAD at this year’s DESIGNERSBLOCK to display some of her unique and innovative projections.

Rosie developed the work as part of her Final Major project.
'I really wanted to push the boundaries of what a surface could be, questioning why does a surface have to be permanent, could it be temporary? I wanted something sustainable, that didn’t want a lot of waste with my final products. This is why I have used light as my material, it becomes a surface that you can change as often as you like. The animation allows the designs to flow and to tell a story, being as literal or as abstract as desired.'

Rosie set up the
GREENSHED
group during her final year of study. The group, made up of students from across the course, devised ways in which to reduce waste and energy use within the Red Shed Studio and Workshops at Bucks New University.

Japan/Fashion talk by Akiko Fukai

We attended the Japan/Fashion talk by Akiko Fukai at the Japan Foundation, London.

Japanese fashion has long been creating a buzz around the world with its unique form and aesthetics which provide a strong contrast to fashions in the West. The Japan Foundation invited Akiko Fukai, Director and Chief Curator of the Kyoto Costume Institute and one of Japan’s most respected fashion historians, to talk about the power of Japanese fashion and its cultural context. Tracing back to the past, she talked about the sources and aesthetics which form the foundations of Japanese fashion, illustrating where Japanese contemporary fashion has come from and what it is today.

Akiko Fukai was the leading curator of the recent Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion exhibition at Barbican Art Gallery, London.

Kate Goldsworthy talk and tutorials

Kate Goldsworthy visited us yesterday and gave a very inspirational talk about her work and current research practice.

'Kate Goldsworthy is a textile designer and researcher, working in the area of new finishing technologies, materials R & D and design for recycling. Her passion lies with tools for sustainability in the textile world, particularly the recycling and reuse of polyesters.
She is currently completing a practice based PhD as part of the AHRC funded project 'Ever & Again; rethinking recycled textiles' with the Textiles Environment Design research cluster based at Chelsea College of Art & Design. Her project explores technologies that could potentially change the way we recycle our textile waste, placing the designer at the centre of a process of multidisciplinary design thinking and enterprise. By focussing on the concept of 'life-cycle design', her aim is to create beautiful and functional synthetic materials, while preserving them as monomaterials, suitable for future recycling.
Kate is Course Coordinator for MA Textile Futures at Central St Martins College of Art & Design and a member of Textile Futures Research Centre.'

Kate is a Visiting Lecturer for our Surface Design pathway and she spent the day in one-to-one tutorials with our Level 6 (3rd year) Surface Design students.

Graduate news: Jodie Byrne

One of our 2009 graduates of the BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design course, Jodie Byrne, has recently set up her own online boutique business.

"Jodie Byrne, 25, had followed in the footsteps of the famous Percy French song by seeking her fortune in London but has now returned home to Newcastle, Co Down the place that inspires her the most to establish an online boutique - http://www.jodiebyrne.com - selling unique Danish home decor.

“You don’t have to live the big city life to run a successful business. Waking up every day to the beauty of the mountains and the rugged seascapes inspires the style of interiors that I have sourced for the online boutique,” Jodie said.

Jodie graduated from Bucks New University in 2009 with a BA (Hons) in Textiles and Surface Design. During her studies, Jodie pursued a keen interest in interior design and printed textiles, publicly and internationally exhibiting her own designs at top industry Trade shows; Indigo Paris, Surtex New York and New Designers London.

Her new online shop includes an eclectic mix of country style furnishings with cutting edge industrial style home ware and vintage inspired items.

The Sorrell Foundation Project

Level 5 (second year) Surface Design students have been working on a live project for the Sorrell Foundation.

The 'Joined up design for schools' project brings teams of design students from selected UK universities together with local secondary schools. The school pupils act as the client for this project and identify an area of their school that they would like to improve. The students then work as a design team, liaising with staff at the school, architects and the local council to produce workable designs to enhance the school environment and answer the brief.

Our Level 5 Surface Designers have teamed up with students from the Spatial Design course and the Graphic Design course at Bucks to deliver a range of design solutions including the redesign of a school canteen, a new library space, outdoor work/break areas and way finding systems to navigate pupils and visitors through the school buildings.

Some of the projects are implemented and, to date, 24 have been realised through the scheme in previous years. These include a sustainable extension and refurbishment of the design & technology block at Falmouth School in Cornwall, a flexible performing arts space at Mounts Bay School, Penzance and a redeveloped sixth-form space at Heart of England School, Coventry.
Our students will be presenting their ideas to their clients next week - good luck and we look forward to seeing the results!

Introduction to Printed Textiles - First Year Project

Group A students (First Years) have recently completed their 7 week introduction to Printed Textiles Design. Each student is asked to create a collection of printed fabrics using traditional and digital techniques. This includes working with silk screens, dyes, printing inks, plain and colour bleaching, devoré, CAD, digital heat press and foiling so as to learn new ways to experiment with colour, geometric shapes, hand painted marks and pattern.

Tutor Andie Robertson said ‘This introduction to printed textiles is often the first time that students have dyed and printed their own fabrics. This unique experience of working with dyes, fabrics and traditional and new technologies encourages them to be inventive and resourceful.’

Students presented their work at a studio catwalk show – with fellow first and second year students and tutors present. The challenge has been set – watch this space - Group B will be presenting their work in 6 weeks time!

Designersblock Visit

We were delighted to have Rory Dodd from Designersblock to visit us at the Red Shed yesterday.

A bit about Designersblock:
Founded by Rory Dodd and Piers Roberts in 1998, Designersblock have produced over 50 major festivals of design, architecture and illustration in the UK and internationally. In doing so they have pioneered the use of transitional architectural spaces for the production of city festivals. Many events take place in derelict or unused buildings throughout city centres. These events, when harnessed to their potential, act as a catalyst for creative engagement and growth, stimulating urban confidence and renewal. Cities recognise creativity as a key driver of regeneration, either through the use of existing underused spaces or in conjunction with bold new planning and construction initiatives.

We had a lovely lunch with the Textiles team followed by a tour of the Red Shed Textiles and Surface Design Studios and the Wood, Metals, Ceramics and Glass, Plastics, Jewellery, Furniture and Upholstery workshops.

Thanks for coming to visit, Rory!

Welcome back Orawee

We would like to welcome back one of our 2010 graduates from the BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design course, Knitted Textiles pathway, Orawee Choedamphai. Orawee has just started her Masters degree with us, dividing her time between the Textiles & Surface Design studio in the Red Shed and the Furniture Design studio.

'Fourth Dimension' project, Orawee Choedamphai, 2010:

The MA in Textiles & Fashion Product at Bucks provides a creative environment that encourages students to challenge design and making conventions through materials, investigation, experimentation, and innovation. Students are encouraged to find new ways of merging design and function, particularly in the context of textiles and fashion product.

Orawee has also recently been awarded the Crafts Council Prize and the Debbie Bliss Award at the UK Hand Knitting Association Awards 2010:

Greenshed Group

GREENSHED Group

Sustainability is becoming vitally important within our lifestyles and even more so within design, so we thought it was about time that the Redshed took a look at its own area to see what improvements we could make. This is how Greenshed was born, the sustainability group for the Textiles and Surface Designers at Bucks!

Our aims are:-
- Cut down on waste and focus more on recycling
- Cut down on unnecessary electricity, e.g. lighting the building when not occupied
- Share and swap materials
- Looking at aspects of the course which could be more sustainable e.g. paperless documents
- Informing others of the ways to create more awareness of a more sustainable way of working within design.

The Redshed is starting to see the benefits of Greenshed’s plans around the studio as the share boxes are in full operation and more paper recycling bins have appeared in each area of the studio. In the near future there is to be a large notice board put up for the latest updates, information on sustainable design and for students to give feedback for even more improvements.

Greenshed hopes to inspire the students towards a sustainable way of working within the studio, being considerate with the usage of light, heat, water and waste but also helping students consider what materials they use in their work and to be inspired by current sustainable design.
